"Helping to apply the Word of God"

Abandoning Our Old Ways

Ephesians 4:17–22 (ESV)

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

The believers in Ephesus lived in a culture that constantly pulled them away from God. We face the same challenge. The world around us can quietly shape our thoughts, values, and desires if we forget whose we are.

Paul writes, “You must no longer walk as the Gentiles do” (Ephesians 4:17). Because we belong to Christ, the patterns of our old life no longer have to define us. Jesus has not simply changed our eternal destination. He has made us new.

That new life begins with a renewed mind. Paul warns about futile thinking and darkened understanding. Romans 12:2 reminds us, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” Instead of allowing culture, popular opinion, or changing emotions to determine what is true, we must continually return to God’s Word.

Paul then brings us back to the heart of our transformation: “But that is not the way you learned Christ!” (Ephesians 4:20). Christianity is more than learning facts about Jesus. It is knowing Him, following Him, and allowing His truth to reshape our lives.

Challenge: Today, pause and ask: What is shaping my thoughts, choices, attitudes, and priorities? Does my life increasingly reflect Jesus?

Prayer: Lord, renew my mind with Your truth. Help me leave behind the patterns of my old life and live out the new life You have given me. Shape my thoughts, soften my heart, and guide my steps so that my life reflects Jesus. Amen.
