"Helping to apply the Word of God"

Acting in Graceful Love

Ephesians 4:29–32 (ESV)

29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear. 30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Jesus does more than forgive our past. He transforms the way we live today. As we put off the old self and put on the new, His grace begins to reshape our words, attitudes, reactions, and relationships.

Paul reminds us that our words matter. We are called to speak truth, reject harmful speech, and use words that build others up. Before speaking, we might ask, “Will my words give grace or cause hurt?” A heart changed by grace should produce words filled with grace.

Paul also tells us not to grieve the Holy Spirit through bitterness, anger, and malicious speech. Instead, we are to be kind, compassionate, and forgiving. This is not always easy, especially when we have been hurt. But our motivation is found in these words: “as God in Christ forgave you.”

We forgive because we have been forgiven. We show mercy because God has shown mercy to us. Forgiveness does not pretend the hurt did not happen. It simply refuses to allow bitterness to control our hearts.

Challenge: Do I simply believe in grace, or do others experience God’s grace through the way I speak, respond, and forgive?

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for the grace You have shown me. Help me speak words that build up, respond with kindness, and forgive as You have forgiven me. Let the grace I have received become the grace others experience through me. Amen.
